Sumaya is the Utilities Innovations and Uganda Country Director at Power for All, leading efforts to test and scale innovative utility models. Leading collaborations with DRE and utilities to create and test innovative approaches, she specialises in facilitating and implementing novel strategies that enable distribution utilities to learn and adopt new technologies. This includes Power for All’s international award-winning Utilities 2.0 campaign and the City of Cape Town’s Energy Efficiency RBF model. Sumaya led Power for All’s award-winning Utilities 2.0 campaign in Uganda, which received the 2023 Ashden Award for Integrated Energy Africa. She played a crucial role in promoting an integrated energy approach in Uganda’s Energy Policy and Isolated Grid Regulations and she managed Cape Town’s award-winning and internationally-recognised Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management initiative. She has managed renewable and energy efficiency projects for the municipality of Cape Town and various consultancy-based projects throughout East and Southern Africa. Sumaya holds an MBA, a Master’s in Sustainable Development (Cum Laude), a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Engineering. In 2022, Sumaya was awarded the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Energy Manager of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers.
